AUTUMN 2018, VIEW OF GARFAGANA FROM THE GIOVO PEAK

Great Daniele, you made a masterpiece!!! Enjoy the show to all of you and congratulations to my friend Daniele from WOOLA.IT WHAT A SHOW!!!

This is what you could see from the cross of Monte Rondinaio on 7 December 2017

May 24, 2016 will be the last snowfall of this strange season????

We couldn't miss a proper mention of the numerous excursions that can be undertaken in our splendid setting. Sure to have an impact when you reach high altitude, we ALWAYS recommend tackling the paths with the appropriate map and the right information, available at our refuge. And of course we wish you a GOOD TRIP!!!

- below is a short proposal written by my friend Francesco Rosati

Excursion suggestions from the book:
"GRUPPO DEL MONTE GIOVO, hiking on the crest of the high Modena Apennines from Passo delle Radici to Passo di Foce a Giovo"
(Francesco Rosati; Edizioni Il Fiorino, 2009).

The author has personally traveled all the itineraries described in the text. The times are indicative and take into account the pace of a good hiker in ideal physical and weather conditions. There may therefore be discrepancies with the times indicated in previous guides or on the CAI MO map.

That being said, the use of this guidebook is at your own risk; the author declines all legal and judicial responsibility for any accidents and damages.

Mount Giovo (1991 m)

It is the highest and most powerful mountain of the Modena Apennine ridge, with vast sides, two glacial cirques, steep gullies, rocky terraces and several peaks that make up the summit.

- ascent to the summit from the north via the normal route, descent to the ENE via Borra dei Porci to Lago Santo.

The ascent to Monte Giovo from the Passo della Boccaia via the squat crest and the northern shoulder is a beautiful excursion, not too long and very panoramic, within the reach of many hikers; it is also one of the safest escape routes from the Apennine ridge in case of bad weather.

If you climb from this side, for a beautiful and not long crossing of the summit we recommend descending to Lago Santo via Borra dei Porci; although this hike is not particularly challenging, this side, due to the steepness and friability of the terrain in some places, is not recommended for totally inexperienced hikers, who would instead descend more easily along the same path followed on the way up.

Estimated time: 1 hour for the ascent, 0.45 hours for the descent. Difference in altitude uphill 417 m. Difficulty: E, at times E+ downhill.

For the complete description see GRUPPO DEL MONTE GIOVO (F. Rosati), Edizioni Il Fiorino (2009).

Connecting ridge between Monte Rondinaio and Monte Giovo

This is a grassy and rocky ridge, very varied and spectacular to walk. Its characteristics make it unique in the Modena Apennines.

- from Monte Rondinaio 1964 m to Monte Giovo 1991 m, along the ridge path n°00.

Considered by many to be the most beautiful hike in the Modena mountains, it is certainly the most treacherous, at least among those on the normal CAI paths.

However, although several passages require attention and a sure step (for the equipped section, an absence of vertigo is also required), for capable hikers the itinerary is not a problem at all, being spectacular for the views and fun in the most challenging points. Route to be avoided in stormy weather, the risk of lightning is not so remote, furthermore a reduction in visibility could increase the difficulties in the treacherous sections.

Difficulty E+/EE; approximately 1.15 hours.

For a complete description see GRUPPO DEL MONTE GIOVO (F. Rosati), Edizioni Il Fiorino (2009).

"Tour of the four lakes" with ascent to Monte Rondinaio Lombardo (1825 m)

Lago Santo>Foce a Giovo>Lago Torbido>Lago Turchino>Finestra del Rondinaio>Rondinaio Lombardo>Lago Baccio>Lago Santo.

Here is proposed a "circuit" of great hiking interest, which allows you to visit the famous four lakes located at the foot of the Giovo-Rondinaio massif and the two beautiful glacial cirques of Rondinaio.

Difficulty E. Total estimated time: approximately 3.30 hours.

For the complete description see GRUPPO DEL MONTE GIOVO (F. Rosati), Edizioni Il Fiorino (2009).
